Reimagining Leadership for a Growing Charity

Love4Life is a pioneering charity supporting people with learning disabilities and autism to build meaningful friendships, relationships and independence. Following its transition into an independent Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO), the Board recognised the need for its first Managing Director to lead the charity through its next phase of growth. The successful candidate would need to combine strategic leadership, income generation expertise, governance knowledge and a deep commitment to the charity’s mission.

The Challenge

This was not a straightforward leadership appointment.

The charity had ambitious plans to expand its reach, strengthen its financial sustainability and increase the number of beneficiaries it supported. At the same time, it needed a leader who could inspire a small but highly committed team, build confidence amongst trustees and stakeholders, and establish the foundations for long-term success. The role required us to think creatively about the talent pool and challenge conventional assumptions around who could successfully step into a role of this nature.

Our Approach

We began by working closely with the Chair and Trustees to understand not only the technical requirements of the role, but the culture, values and aspirations of the organisation.

Together, we reimagined the candidate profile, focusing on transferable leadership capability rather than simply seeking individuals who had previously held a CEO title. We identified a wider talent pool spanning fundraising leadership, operations, strategic development and disability-focused organisations.

The search combined:

  • Targeted executive search and direct approaches.
  • Extensive outreach across the charity and social impact sectors.
  • Promotion through Valued’s inclusive networks and communities.
  • Flexible working and transparent salary messaging to maximise candidate attraction.
  • A values-led assessment process exploring leadership style, lived experience, motivation and cultural alignment.

Throughout the process, we prioritised candidate experience, ensuring every applicant received timely communication, constructive feedback and an inclusive recruitment journey.

The Outcome

The campaign generated a strong and diverse field of candidates from across the charity sector, many of whom were not actively seeking a new role.

Following a rigorous assessment process, we successfully appointed an exceptional leader who brought a blend of strategic fundraising expertise, organisational leadership and a genuine passion for the charity’s mission.

The successful candidate quickly established credibility with the Board, team and stakeholders, providing the strategic oversight required to strengthen governance, drive income growth and support the charity’s ambitious expansion plans.

Lasting Impact

The appointment enabled Love4Life to move confidently into its next stage of development, with strengthened leadership capacity, greater organisational resilience and a clear strategic direction for growth.
